If you thought Dawn was only used for cleaning dishes…think again.
Until recently, I had NO idea Dawn Detergent could be used to clean a lot of other things around the house. Now, I swear by this stuff!
It’s actually one of the main ingredients in many homemade cleaners.

15 Genius Dawn Detergent Uses
What I love most about Dawn Ultra detergent soap is that it’s super cheap and a little goes a long way.
Today, I’ll be sharing my favorite and newly discovered Dawn Detergent uses that you’ll wish you knew sooner.
1) Window cleaner
If your windows are long overdue for a cleaning, just using glass cleaner sometimes won’t get it clean. You’ll need to give them a wash first to avoid those streaks.
Simply fill a bucket with warm water and add a few drops of Dawn Detergent.
Pro Tip: Using a sponge will soap up the glass and make the cleaning process go faster!
2) All purpose cleaner
Using Dawn as a multi-purpose cleaner is perfect for when you’re running low on your go-to cleaners and you’ve got to use what you have to get tough jobs done.
In a spray bottle, add 1-2 drops of Dawn Detergent and slowly fill the rest with 8 ounces of warm water. Swish it around to mix well and spray on: bathroom & kitchen countertops, baseboards and walls, shelves, and kitchen appliances.
Pro Tip: You can use this thrifty solution to quickly clean up sticky messes from tile and laminate floors too!
3) Carpet stain remover
I don’t have to tell you that when you’re raising kids, stains happened—especially on carpets and furniture. Here’s a safe way to clean up spills immediately: Add 1/4 cup of white vinegar & 1 tbsp of Dawn Detergent to a glass spray bottle. Fill with water.
Spray liberally and let it soak for 5-10 minutes, then begin blotting it with a clean, dry towel until the stain is gone.
Pro Tip: Store this DIY stain removal solution underneath your kitchen sink so you can tackle those carpet spills faster every time!
4) Jewelry cleaner
Keep your favorite pieces sparkling without waiting for your next visit to the jewelry store. Simply add a few drops of Dawn dish soap and warm water to a small container. Then, add your piece to the solution and let it sit for 5-10 minutes and wipe clean.
Pro Tip: Use a new infant-size or soft toothbrush to gently clean every nook and cranny until your jewelry looks like new again.
5) De-grease tools
A great way to prevent rust from forming on your husband’s favorite tools is to soak them in Dawn with warm water for about 30 minutes after using them on those greasy automotive repairs.
Pro Tip: Rinse and dry the tools with a clean towel to keep them from rusting.
6) Unclogging toilets
I have to be honest; I didn’t think this was possible until I tried it myself. Just add a cup or two of Dawn Detergent inside the toilet. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Then, fill a bucket with hot water and slowly pour it a few feet above the toilet seat into the toilet bowl and it should be clogged-free!
7) Tub & shower cleaner
Stop spending all of your time and energy scrubbing slime, gunk, and other yuckiness off your shower walls. This Dawn Detergent recipe makes it SO much easier to get your tub and shower squeaky clean!
Simply take a spray bottle and fill it halfway with white vinegar. Heat it in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds until it’s warm. Fill the rest of the way with Dawn and shake it to mix ingredients well. Then, spray liberally on your tub or shower walls and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes. Rinse or wipe away—that’s it!
8) Outdoor furniture cleaner
When the weather breaks it’s good to freshen up your outdoor furniture. Mix a few squirts of Dawn Detergent with warm water in a bucket and wash your furniture down. After washing, you can rinse it with clean water and let it air dry.
Pro Tip: Check the weather beforehand so it won’t get rained on.
9) Eyeglasses cleaner
Foggy lenses are the worst, aren’t they? Thankfully, you can skip that overpriced bottle of eyeglass cleaner and use Dawn instead! Add a small drop of it on your lenses and wipe it clean with a microfiber cloth. It’ll leave a very thin film that’ll keep it from getting fogged again.
10) Homemade bubbles
Kids LOVE bubbles! So if you’re anything like me and you don’t have a bubble machine lying around, here’s a really cool way for your kids to get in on all the fun. And they can even help you make this easy 3-ingredient bubble recipe too!
Mix 1 tbsp of glycerine with 1/2 cup of Dawn and 1 gallon of warm water. Now your kids will have a blast dipping their wands and blowing endless amounts bubbles ANYtime!
11) De-ice sidewalks
This method is a better way to melt your icy steps, sidewalks, and concrete driveway than using salt—and it won’t refreeze! Grab a bucket. Add 1/2 gallon of hot/warm water, 2 tbsp of rubbing alcohol, and 1 tsp of Dawn. Mix well and pour it on your frozen concrete sidewalks.
12) Clean pool toys
After a day of backyard fun, dump the water and scrub down your kiddie pool or other water toys with Dawn and a sponge (instead of using bleach to remove dirt if it’s made of plastic).
Pro Tip: You can also squirt dawn soap down the middle of your in-ground pool and all of the dirt will move to the edges for an easy-peasy cleanup!
13) Manicure like a pro
When giving yourself a manicure, you should soak your fingernails in Dawn soap with warm water first. This will soften your cuticles and strip your fingernails of natural oils making them softer and easier to work with. That way, when you add nail polish it’ll adhere better.
14) Keep your pets pest-free
Bathing your dog in Dawn Detergent kills fleas on contact and it’s much cheaper than buying many fancy dog shampoos.
15) Repel ants
During the first few weeks of spring, I seem to find ants everywhere and I hate it. But the good news is, ants hate Dawn! Which is MUCH safer to use than those home defense chemical sprays around the house with kids and pets.
Simply add Dawn soap and water to a spray bottle. Liberally spray your countertops, baseboards, cabinets, and any other areas you see ants and wipe away. It’ll leave behind a residue that’ll repel ants from returning. And whenever you do see a brave one crawl by, spray it!
