6 Time Hacks For Moms Who Hate Grocery Shopping

Do you ever find yourself spending more time and money than you intended at the grocery store?

Yup. You’re not alone here.

I’d walk in with the intention to grab a few things but walk out with a cart FULL of stuff.

So between the long lines and endless distractions, it would take over an hour to finish grocery shopping—including the time it took to get to-and-from the store, and I hated it.

That’s why today, I am so EXCITED to share with my favorite grocery shopping hacks for people like me that just want to get in-and-out of the store faster. Plus, save a little extra money too!

1. Making a list and check it twice.

You should always make a grocery list before leaving your house. This will keep you on track and focused while you’re shopping so you don’t pile the cart with items you don’t need; therefore, spending more money than you bargained for.

You can even take it a step further and categorize your grocery list by section (produce, meats, cereals, etc.). When my shopping list is organized, I spend less time pacing the aisles.

2. Avoid shopping on weekends.

Want to avoid large crowds and long lines? Don’t buy groceries on the weekends.

Saturday and Sunday are no doubt the busiest days to shop. Monday and Tuesday are the least busy days, but the shelves are often empty from the weekend rush.

My favorite day to go to the grocery store is on Mondays. I’ll go early in the morning or after 6 pm.

3. Shop at the same store.

When you shop at the same store each week, you’ll know when items go on sale and where everything is, which saves a ton of time. You’ll also get to know the people who work there, too!

There was one time I went to my local Kroger store to grab a pound of ground beef. It was on sale for $3.99.

As I rolled away, the meat manager came out of nowhere and offered to switch the beef I had in my hand for a better selection.

He sold me 2 lbs of ground beef for just $2. So it pays to be loyal!

4. Leave the kids at home.

I remember being a kid and before we walked into the grocery store my mom would always have the “don’t-ask-for-nothing” conversation with us in the car.

Because as moms, we know that when you bring kids (or your husband too) to the grocery store with you something always mysteriously finds its way in the cart that shouldn’t be there. And it’s hard telling your kids no when they give you puppy dogs eyes and a “please, mommy with cherries on top.”

But when you leave the over-spenders at home, you’ll make it easier on yourself to stick to your grocery list and stay on budget.

5. Pull into the first parking spot you find.

Circling around the parking lot, looking for a spot closer to the front, is what everyone does. It burns more gas and extra time you could be spending inside the store.

So the next time you run to the store, try parking in the first spot you see and enjoy the bit of exercise you’ll get from walking a little further!

6. Do all of your shopping online!

One of my FAVORITE grocery shopping hacks these days is utilizing online grocery shopping! I love love LOVE Walmart’s FREE grocery pickup service because I save so much time (I mean, I get to grocery shop in my pajamas! Who does that?) AND make sure I’m not overspending since I can see my cart subtotal the entire time.

Here’s how it works:

  • First, you download the Walmart Grocery App and sign in or create a free account
  • Choose your Walmart Grocery Pickup store
  • Select a day and time slot for your pickup side note: you may not be able to order and pick up your groceries the same day, so it’s best to order your groceries one-day before you need them just in case.
  • Search for the items on your grocery list and add them to your cart
  • Checkout and wait to be notified that your order is ready for pickup!

It’s also worth mentioning that you need to spend $35 or more to order your groceries for pickup, and prices are the same as they are if you shopped in the store!

You’ll have a one-hour window to pick up your groceries, and when you arrive, someone will load your bags for you in your trunk.

There are no hidden fees. No tipping. No getting out of your car. NOTHING to it, but to do it!

Bottom Line

If these grocery shopping hacks seem a bit simple it’s because they really are! But they do make a difference.

Before I implemented these shopping hacks, going to the grocery store felt like a chore that I dreaded every.single.week.
